As lace on fabric, flourishes can add life and the ‘finishing touch” to hand-lettering. Their beauty lies in their free, effortless grace.

In this course, you will learn that underneath the casual look of these strokes lies strong form. We will examine, step by step, the formation of these shapes, as well as their appropriate placement in a letter.

Schedule:

8th and 10th June: 7:30-10pm IST

12th and 13th June: 6:30-9pm IST

Over the course of 4 days, We will cover the following topics:

• The basic rules of adding flourishes to calligraphy 

• Lower case letter flourishes

• Upper case letter flourishes

• Over a 100 flourish examples

• How to create delicate watercolour florals using wedge brush and add them to our calligraphy 

 

Each Participant will receive:

> A PDF of the handouts

> A zoom link for the session

> Recordings of the sessions for 3 weeks after the workshop

• A dot card with primary watercolours

You can purchase the Princeton Petals Brush individually from our shop as well

 

Recommended Material:

  • Oblique pen holder 
  • Your favorite pointed pen nibs, such as Hunt 22, 56 or Gillott 303 or 404, the  G Nib or Leonardt Principal
  • A good quality layout bond paper, such as 9” x 12” Canson Pro Layout Marker
  • Sumi Moon Palace black ink, or McCaffrey’s Black
  • Silver Ruby Satin Triangle brush or other wedge brush (samples other vendors are attached) My favorite are the Royal Langnickel, the Princeton Petals Brush, the Ruby Satin,  or the Roseamary & Co Brush. Medium size will be best 
  • a few tubes of watercolor, a red, blue and yellow
  • a sheet of hot press watercolor paper, cut into fourths, or a page or two from a watercolor pad, hot press
About the Teacher:
Pat Blair served 12 1/2 years as the Chief Calligrapher at the White House in Washington, D.C., directing the production ofinvitation and menu design for all official and social presidential events, calligraphy of placecards, envelopes and titles, certificate and resolution design as well as production of programs and tour books. She served two years as the President of the Washington Calligrapher’s Guild in Washington, DC., was the chairperson of the Graceful Envelope contest sponsored by the US Postal Service, and served as co-director for the International Lettering Conference, Letterforum.
Her work has been published in the Calligrapher’s Engagement Calendar, Letter Arts Review, Top 100 New York Calligraphers, Grolier Club Calligraphy Revival, and Martha Stewart Weddings, among others.  She teaches at the Loudoun Academy of the Arts, and has been on the faculty of over ten International Calligraphy Conferences.
Her workshops emphasize the grace and elegance that letterforms can achieve by paying close attention to the beauty of the form, and she is currently offering both in-person and online workshops.  She has been awarded the title Master Penman by the International Assoc of Master Penmen, Engrossers and Teachers of Handwriting for her work .
Please note: All participants are required to have the basic knowledge of Copperplate Script to follow along.
